Travel tips for Zion National Park
Zion is a very popular park, so before you visit it is important to do research that allows you to have the best experience possible!
Here are some of my tips for the park:
Take the free shuttle bus
For the most part of the year, private vehicles are not allowed on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive.
To get around the park, you’ll need to take the free shuttle bus which runs every 7-10 minutes from the parks’ Visitor Center to the various viewpoints and trails throughout Zion National Park.
You can see the shuttles’s schedule here.
You need a permit to hike Angels Landing
If you want to hike the popular Angels Landing trail, you’ll need to get a permit.
Permits are free and can be obtained at the Visitor Center or self-service kiosks.
Get an early start
Zion National Park is a very popular national park, so it’s best to get an early start if you want to avoid crowds.
The shuttle buses start running at 6 am, so I would recommend getting up early and taking the bus to one of the trails as soon as it starts running.
Wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water
Due to its location, Zion National Park can be quite hot, even in winter. So make sure to wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water, especially if you’re hiking.
What to pack for Zion National Park
For making the most out of your visit to the park, make sure to pack:
- Hiking shoes
- A hat
- Snacks or sandwiches if you are staying for the whole day
- At least 2 liters of water per person
8 Best things to do in Zion National Park

1- Hike The Narrows
The Narrows is one of the most popular trails in Zion National Park and for good reason. This hike takes you into a slot canyon where you will be wading through water for most of the hike.
The best time to do this hike is in the summer when the water is cooler or in the spring when the water level is lower.
2- Explore the slot canyons of East Zion
If you’re looking for a less crowded alternative to The Narrows, then check out the slot canyons of East Zion.
There are several slot canyons to explore in this part of the park and they are all accessible from the same trailhead.
Some of the more popular ones include Spry Canyon, Echo Canyon, and Orderville Canyon.
3- Hike to Angels Landing
Angels Landing is one of the most popular trails in Zion National Park and offers stunning views of the surrounding canyon.
This hike is not for the faint of heart as it involves some exposure and scrambling over rocks, but it is definitely worth it for the views.
